Meet Greg Markowski — The Story Behind Epic IT

By Greg Markowski / Feb 10, 2026 / Epic IT News

Every IT company has an origin story. Most of them involve someone leaving a corporate job and starting a consultancy. Ours starts with a living room in Balcatta, a working holiday in Europe, and a Faith No More song.

From a Living Room to North Perth

Greg Markowski founded Epic IT in late 2003. In the beginning, there was no team, no office, and no specialisation. Greg did everything himself — setting up Wi-Fi networks, building websites, and at one point running an online computer store that actually did quite well. All of it from his living room.

The name came from two places. The first was a small town outside London called Epping, where Greg spent time during a two-year working holiday in Europe. The second was Faith No More’s 1989 track Epic — Greg was a fan. He considered changing the name after the word became overused in popular culture, but decided to stick with it.

Eventually Greg had to choose a focus. He chose managed IT services and rented a small office in Balcatta. Not long after, while quoting a job in North Perth, he noticed an empty office next door. He was not successful on the quote, but he did snag the space — moving in two weeks later.

That North Perth office is still our headquarters more than twenty years on.

Building a Cybersecurity-First MSP

What started as a one-person operation has grown into one of Western Australia’s fastest-growing managed IT services providers. Epic IT now employs more than 35 staff, supports over 100 business clients, and has expanded beyond Perth to serve organisations interstate.

In the company’s more recent years, Greg has driven a deliberate strategic shift towards cybersecurity as a core pillar of every client engagement. This was not a marketing exercise. It came from seeing the threat landscape change and recognising that IT support without security is no longer a defensible position for any MSP.

Today, Epic IT delivers both managed IT and managed cybersecurity under one agreement — built around the Essential Eight, SMB1001, and Further Five frameworks. Every client gets security built into their IT foundation, not bolted on as an afterthought.

Recognition

The growth has not gone unnoticed. Epic IT has been named a CRN Fast50 finalist four times — in 2013, 2018, 2024, and 2025 — recognising the company as one of the fastest-growing technology businesses in Australia. The CRN Fast50 ranks companies by year-on-year revenue growth, and making the list once is an achievement. Doing it four times over twelve years tells a different story — one of sustained, compounding growth rather than a single good year.

In 2021, Epic IT achieved Microsoft Gold Partner status, which has since transitioned to the current Microsoft Solutions Partner designation — the highest tier of Microsoft’s partner programme.

In 2020, Microsoft selected Epic IT to promote managed cybersecurity services to Australian businesses. That was not a badge we applied for. It was a direct endorsement from Microsoft based on our security capabilities and client outcomes.

ARN — one of Australia’s leading technology publications — featured Greg and Epic IT in their national Partner Spotlight series, exploring what drives a North Perth MSP to outpace larger competitors across the country.

Industry Involvement

Greg has represented Epic IT at major industry events including Channel Future in Sydney and Microsoft Inspire in Las Vegas, contributing to discussions on the future of managed services and the channel partner ecosystem.

Closer to home, Epic IT is a proud sponsor of the West Coast Eagles, a long-term sponsor of the WHS Foundation Awards supporting workplace health and safety across Western Australia, and has contributed to local education through initiatives like the Bassendean Primary School technology donation programme. The team also participates in community events like the annual HBF Run for a Reason.

Where We Are Now

Greg’s focus today is on the strategic direction of the business — identifying where the industry is heading and positioning Epic IT ahead of the curve. The most recent example of this is the company’s decision to adopt Anthropic’s Claude as our enterprise AI platform rather than Microsoft’s own Copilot. That decision — detailed in a widely-read article on our site — was driven by data privacy architecture, enterprise security requirements, and a governance-first approach to AI adoption.

Under Greg’s leadership, Epic IT has also launched a dedicated AI Services offering, including AI Governance, Managed AI, and AI Readiness Assessments — helping Perth businesses adopt AI safely with governance and security built in from the start.

Twenty-two years after starting from a living room in Balcatta, the goal has not changed. Build a company that business owners actually trust with their technology. The scale is different. The principles are the same.
